Week 44 of my Project 365:

Dustin & Luna dropped me off in Hopkinton and I run 22.5 miles on the Boston Marathon course…but you know all that! After the nice ice bath met up with two of my favorite people and had a delicious brunch at Zaftig, which became the after long run ritual in the last fe months. I am boring and get the same thing, classic french toast made with Challah bread yummm and my hubby gets something different every time! And that says everything about us=) After a day around we went home and my honey cooked for us a delicious burger with sweet potatoes fries ( instead of frying them though we cooked them in the oven…amazing!!!) and we cuddle on the couch watching The Smurfs with  Neil Patrick Harris who we LOVE Ha! Oh and it’s “I Puffi ” in Italian, for those of you who wonder what italian call those small blue fictional creatures=)

My legs felt amazing so went for a 6.5 miles….hmmm maybe I pushed it! My favorite breakfast in the last few months, bananas and fresh home made almond butter yummi!

Had a day off and my baby took it off too so we can spend some good quality time together! Went to the British Beer Company for lunch hoping to find the Samuel Adams 26.2 Brew,” a low-alcohol beer made to commemorate the Boston Marathon. But unfortunately they still don’t have it! Of course Dustin didn’t give up on beer that day=)) Oh and my love spoiled me to death and bought me the official 2012 Boston Marathon Jacket!

Went to the Wellesley  College track and took some photos for work! Couldn’t resist and photograph my favorite number. 8 is for the day I was born, 8 is for the day Dustin and I got married in Italy, 8 is the symbol of love, 8 is for infinity which is the love we have for each other! 8 is the only number that ends upwards, when you finish writing this unique number. The loop in the 8 shows how life is. It reminds us that we come back from where we all started the journey. This is the number of hope.


Dustin told me go for a lap after we did the photo shoot and I did=) Brrrr it was cold though!

My poor love is super stressed with work. He has so much going on right now and have no time for himself and even that he never complains, he never brings it home, he is always positive and he is always there for me no matter what.  That is one of the reasons that we’ve been trying to set a time to go an a vacation but it hasn’t really been working out. In fact, we are gonna do that later during the year or most likely in January/February of  2013. What we really wanna do though is going to Italy to see my family who we haven’t seen in almost a year. I miss them very much and it’s so sad that I have a niece who  is now 7 months old that I haven’t even met yet! So, on Monday on our day off we finally decided on a date! We were going to go from the end of April to the beginning of May but today we unfortunately found out that Dustin has a very important launch in mid May and he needs to be here to supervised it.  So we are postponing Italy=(  And this has nothing to do with the photo of the day ! Anyway, we love to eat dessert (maybe to nourish our soul) but Dustin found a way to make delicious frozen dessert that is healthy !  We bought the Yonanas ice cream maker, a new easy to use ice cream maker that uses frozen bananas and other ingredients like frozen berries to make, healthy soft serve ice cream.

Just got back from a nice 12 miler and noticed a lot of blooming trees all around!  So, after I got back I took my camera and took a shot of this gorgeous tree right outside our house!

My First Ice Bath!

I took the plunge!  After two years of running and training for three Marathons, I finally gave the infamous “ice bath” a trial run.  Sounds crazy, right?!  It turned not to be nearly as bad as I had envisioned.


On Saturday morning, Dustin and Luna dropped me off at the starting line of the Boston Marathon in Hopkinton and ran to Cleaveland Circle (about a mile after the infamous Newton Hills) which was 22.5 miles.  My pace averaged 7:46 which is pretty much on for my target pace at this point in training. As expected the course was filled with runners, water stations, cheering station etc. the energy was amazing and it definitely helped me keep the pace I was hoping for=) Oh and Dustin chatted withTedy Bruschi, the former American college  football player, who had a drink from the water station that was set up on our lawn and I passed him at the Wellesley College. Tedy Bruschi had a stroke in February 2005 at the age of 31, just weeks after winning his third Super Bowl with the Patriots. As he recovered, Tedy committed himself to being an advocate, spokesperson, and inspiration for stroke survivors in our area. That’s why he is running the Boston Marathon to raise funds for the American Stroke Association.

Back to my ice bath! Dustin picked me up, stopped by the store to get a bag of ice and once home, he immediately started the cold water in the tub and dumped the bag of ice in it. I pulled Dustin white T-shirt and his boxers on (no need to freeze on top!) and sat down in the cold water. The first minute was brutal! AHHHHHHH!!!!! But I have to say that after I got used to it and was able to stay in for 5 minutes (instead of 2 as Dustin planned for me). If it wasn’t for my feet that were hurting, I could have soaked for a little longer.

After the initial shock, it felt great!!! When I got out my knees, legs and feet felt so much better, and the best part I had NO soreness at all the next day. Needless to say, I am hooked! I  will keep doing the ice baths from now on after my long runs.

Why should I take an ice bath? It’s freezing!
Ice baths are one of the most effective ways to offset the damage done on a run. Long runs are essential to the training distance runners because they help the body to adapt to running greater distances safely and efficiently. Unfortunately, long runs also increase the runner’s risk of injury.  An ice bath right after an intense running session can actually do wonders for your body. Right after an intense activity, like a long run or a set of short sprints, your muscles experience microtrauma. These are small tears in the muscle fibers, which are perfectly normal for runners. You’re probably feeling some of it when your muscles hurt after an exhausting run, but you won’t feel every tear since they are, micro(small).Because of the very low temperature, ice bath is a great treatment for muscle soreness, strain, and inflammation. It also prevents the breakdown of muscle tissues. The cold water will stimulate muscle cells to start repairing the muscle tears.As you immerse yourself in the ice bath, you’ll get relief from your sore muscles, like your hamstring, gluteus, calves and quadriceps. Thus, it gives your body optimal conditions for recovery. According to a Runner’s World article these are the benefits of Ice Baths:

Cryotherapy (“cold therapy”) constricts blood vessels and decreases metabolic activity, which reduces swelling and tissue breakdown. Once the skin is no longer in contact with the cold source, the underlying tissues warm up, causing a return of faster blood flow, which helps return the byproducts of cellular breakdown to the lymph system for efficient recycling by the body. “Ice baths don’t only suppress inflammation, but help to flush harmful metabolic debris out of your muscles,” says David Terry, M.D., an ultrarunner who has finished both the Western States 100-Mile Endurance Run and the Wasatch Front 100-Mile Endurance Run 10 consecutive times.

How can I do it at home?

You can enjoy ice bath therapy right from the comfort of your own home. In fact, you just need a bath tub, water, and few ice bags. Here are the steps that you can take to conduct ice bath therapy at home:

  • Get  a couple of ice of bags at the nearest convenience store
    Remember that your target temperature for an ice bath is between 50 to 59 degrees Fahrenheit, and immersion time should ranges from 5 to 15 minutes. 10 Minutes is ideal!
  • Fill the tub with cold water right after your run
    Put enough water to fill up to your waists so that the whole lower body can benefit from the therapy.
  • Add ice
    If you have a thermometer, you should measure how cold the tub is before going in.
  • Slowly step in the tub and prepare for the extremely cold water
    You can put on a down jacket or a sweater,a hat, thick socks, and make yourself a cup of hot tea, chocolate, coffee
Things to Keep in Mind
  • Don’t stay too long in the tub
    Ten minutes should be more than enough time to stay in the tub. Stay for more than twenty and you’ll risk suffering from cold-induced muscle damage.
  • Your first few sessions will be the hardest
    It would be a great idea if you would have something to keep you warm by your side, perhaps a cup of hot chocolate or tea. You might also want to find something to do while under ice bath therapy. You could bring a running book or a magazine with you.
  • Take a warm bath or shower around 30 minutes to an hour later
    Muscles, along with the tissues, have a tendency to become stiff and tense in extreme cold.
  • There are times when you might want to jump out of the tub because you can’t handle the cold
    I would suggest that you try your best to handle it. Keep yourself motivated by keeping in mind that this therapy will help your muscles recover, thus, possibly allowing you to have a better performance in your next run.
  • Extremely cold ice baths, colder than the advised temperature, could result to fainting
    It’s always best to check the temperature from time to time. It’s also better if you let someone know that you’re in the tub with ice. Do this for safety reasons.

Not quite ready to take an ice bath? Well, thing that this therapy will definitely help you reach your athletic goals, whatever they may be. Famous athletes will tell you that ice bath therapy works amazing. They believe that ice bath therapy gives them speedy recovery, and at the same time, helps in preventing injuries. So, what are you waiting for? If you have a race coming up, you should seriously consider taking ice baths to make sure you’re 100% ready for the big day. Quickly repair that muscle damage through regular ice baths after intense running.

17 Days til my second Boston Marathon!! With a total of 663 Miles on my legs I’m feeling pretty GOOD!

It was Dustin’s 30th Surprise Birthday party! It was so much fun! I told him I was going to work and left the house at 9:30am picked up his gorgeous new watch and went to Bob and Laura’s house to prepare for the party. I can stress enough to say how I couldn’t have done it without the help of Amanda, who we consider like a sister and certainly reminds me of Dustin (if he was a girl) in so many ways and Laura and Bob! We love you so much guys!

He is an incredibly hard worker, he is smart, he knows everything, he is hilarious, he is sweet and caring, and I definitely look up to him for all those things and more.  I am constantly surprised with his unending patience, generosity and genuine love. My husband is literally the best man I’ve ever met in my life.  I’m so thankful for him, he makes me a better person. I love him more than life itself and words cannot describe how blessed I feel to have him in my life.

I’ve always been one who loves to celebrate birthdays. I enjoy making the people I love feel treasured and loved on their special day.  I love buying gifts, plan parties, decorating the house with streamers, balloons, and confetti. And this time was no different. On Saturday night we threw him a Wine Around the World surprise birthday party  in honor of his special day and it was so much fun! I cannot have done all the planning without the amazing help, support, brainstorming sessions, laughters and  LOVE of Dustin’s mom Laura, Bob and our superwoman friend and what we not only call but totally feel like Dustin’s sister, Amanda. You are all special human beings and words cannot express how grateful I am for all you did and all the love you show me every day!  You guys are incredible and I had so much fun with all of you (and of course Granny and Grampa) all day Saturday getting everything ready for the big party, I couldn’t have done it without your precious help and your contagious laughters. I love you all so much and I am so lucky to have you in my life as part of my FAMILY!

Amanda made 4 dozen ( I know she is amazing) of 5 different flavor Vegan cupcakes! Green tea, mint chocolate, cookies n’ cream, lemon and Red Velvet. Dustin couldn’t stop talking about how amazing they all were…oh yes he tried every single flavor!

Incredible and emotional long day. Started off waking up at 5 to drive to Hyannis with Fabiana and Rick for Fabs first full Marathon. I run the half and  I got a PR but the most emotional part was running with Fabiana her last 5 miles of the Marathon and helping her fighting through pain and negative thoughts. Here she is emotionally broke down after she accomplished that goal of hers to run a Marathon!

This weekend is dedicated to celebrate Dustin’s 30th Birthday! Whoo hooo His birthday is on Wednesday March 7th but since (I am very sad every time I say it) he will be away for work that day, we are gonna celebrate the whole week ( in one way or another) starting tomorrow!

My 2 Year Runniversary

Two years ago today…

  • I ran my very first mile of my first half marathon training.
  • I had no idea what a Garmin was, what lactate threshold meant, what tempo, BQ, VO2, or really any running terms meant.  Had no idea there were running terms and what Boston qualifier meant.
  • I had no idea if I could run 26.2 miles.
  • I would have never imagined that I would qualify  for the Boston Marathon on my first attempt.
  • I had no idea what a huge impact running would have on my life.
  • I had no idea I was born to run.
  • My life changed for the very best.
  • Fell in love with lululemon running gears and people that worked at the Natick store. Researched more about the company and loved everything about it to the point that I applied for a job and here I am now being with the company for over 7 months.

I still can’t believe it’s been two full years since that day.

If you don’t know my story, I had a marathon on my bucket list.  I was bored in my workout routine and needed a new challenge, so I took a leap of faith and sign up for the Great Bay Half Marathon in Newmarket, NH (Crazy hilly) to test my endurance out.  One little mile started it all.

I have learned so much about running and about myself in those two years and I cannot imagine what I would be doing now without it.  Running has become such a huge part of my life now and has introduced me to the most amazing people and community.  I am very, very lucky to have found it.

So here I am 2 years later, still running.  Running and me just click.  I can’t imagine not running and I can’t wait to see what I have going on in another 2 years!

In the past 2 years i have…

  • Ran 20 races including 2 full marathons and 9 half marathons
  • Shaved 10 minutes off my first Half Marathon
  • Ran a total of 3338.9 miles since day one ( Few more miles and it’s like I ran to Italy=)

Running has changed my life for the better.  It has given me something to always strive for and to look forward to.  It has taught me that I can do anything I set my mind to, and that I am tougher than I thought I was.  It has introduced me to a lot of amazing people. It keeps me sane, focused, dedicated and happy.  It has made me stronger, both physically and emotionally.  It has taught me that hard work pays off. And it is one of the thing in my life I am very confident about.
