2012 Boston Marathon

Natascia’s Training Journal for the 116th Boston Marathon 

This is the training I put together.

This year I decided to keep a daily journal of what I am actually doing and maybe some notes on the weather etc. So far I cannot complain about the weather, last year at this time we’ve already had major snowstorms and the weather continued to be cold, icy and snowy throughout the winter making it a record for the snowiest and coldest winter in Boston.

Week 1 – Jan 2 – 8 ( – 15 Weeks)

Day 1 – Monday Jan 2, 2011 ~ 104 Days until the Race
6.07 Miles @ 8:00  ~ It was a gorgeous day out, sunny and 4oF. Wore my new pink New Balance which I love so much.

Day 2 – Tuesday Jan. 3, 2011 ~ 103 Days until the Race
10.2 Miles @ 8:10 ~ Cold day, run on 135 on the Boston Marathon Route towards Hopkington. My pink NB got a “Nice shoes” from few guys and lots of looks=) Stretched my hams good.

Day 3 – Wednesday Jan. 4, 2011 ~ 102 Days until the Race
6 Miles @ 8:09 ~ Very cold day, I think it was 11°F. Couldn’t feel my chin! Wore my old Nike for a change. Stretched my hams good.

Day 4 – Thursday Jan. 5, 2011 ~ 101 Days until the Race
11 Miles @ 8:17 ~  Woke up with a cold. It was 20°F, cold but warmer than yesterday. Wore New Balance shoes. Around mile 7 I started to get hungry, dizzy and tired. Need to eat a snack next time. Run into Marissa=) My hams started to bother me (very very lightly) Stretched really good, first outside right after the run and then inside for about 10 minutes. Also used the stick on legs=)

Day 5 – Friday Jan. 6,2012 ~ 100 Days until Race
6 Miles @ 8:10 after work as I was at work early.  It was about 40°F, pretty nice evening. Felt slow but it’s that time of the month and my legs were a little tired.

Day 6 – Saturday Jan. 7, 2012 ~ 99 Days until Race

17 Miles @ 8:43 early in the am (6:30) It was 25°F, chilly. Run on Boston marathon course till half way through the Newton Hills. Nike Shoes. At 10:30am went to my first class of the Crossfit Element Course at Cross Fit New England with Dustin!

Day 7 – Sunday Jan. 8, 2012 ~ 98 Days until Race

Day off from running. Spinning with Gstar at 9 am. 2nd Class of Crossfit element course.

Week 2 – Jan 9 – 15 ( – 14 Weeks)

Day 8 – Monday Jan. 9, 2012 ~ 97 Days until Race

12 Miles @8:38. It was 25°F, chilly. Last few runs I felt pretty slow not sure why=( NB shoes.

Day 9 – Tuesday Jan. 10, 2012 ~ 96 Days until Race

6 Miles @ 8:05. Such a gorgeous day, sunny and 45°F! Wore my new Asics and felt really tight, especially on left foot I got  tingling sensation. (formiche hai piedi literally translated from italian Ants of the feet)

Day 10 – Wednesday Jan. 11, 2012 ~ 95 Days until Race

12 Miles @ 8:27. It was a nice and sunny day, about 25°F. NB shoes are amazing! Explored new route.

Day 11 – Thursday Jan. 12, 2012 ~ 94 Days until Race

6 Miles @ 8:25. Rainy/slushy day. It was windy and chilly on my face. Plus, few frontal impact with puddle splashers slowed me down and got me kinda wet! Wore Nike so I wouldn’t get my NB wet=)

Day 12 – Friday Jan. 13, 2012 ~ 93 Days until Race

18 Miles @ 8:24. Left around 6:30 so it was cold 25°F but a beautiful day. New Balance Shoes=amazing! Run into Fabiana, Dianna and Dawn on 135. Crossfit Element Course.

Day 14 – Sunday Jan. 15, 2012 ~ 91 Days until Race

5 Miles @ 8:16. Very cold like 7°F. Got icycle on my face. Spinning at Gstar and last class of the Element Course.

Total Miles: 59.35 Miles

Week 3 – Jan 16 – 22 ( – 13 Weeks)

Day 15 – Monday Jan. 16, 2012 ~ 90 Days until Race

Day 16 – Tuesday Jan. 17, 2012 ~ 89 Days until Race

12 Miles @ 9:04. It snowed few inches during the night. It was warm on 37°F and very slushy out there. Sidewalks weren’t very clean, so it was slippery at times especially when going up hill. Plus I wasn’t 100%, still had the tooth pain bothering me and a headache. Plus didn’t sleep much as Dustin is in California for work this week=( At 11 am went to Power Yoga with Tom at HYP in Wellesley with Chris. Felt really good to stretch!

Day 17 – Wednesday Jan. 18, 2012 ~ 88 Days until Race

6.1 Miles @ 7:50. Cold and windy morning, 30°F. Felt really good, wore for the first time my New Balance 1400, they are so light. Love them! At 11 am went to Power Yoga with Sheryl at HYP in Wellesley. Still sore from yesterday class!

Day 18 – Thursday Jan. 19, 2012 ~ 87 Days until Race

12..4 Miles @ 8:15. Cold morning 10°F but nice clear roads. Met Marisa around mile 2.4 and run 6 miles with her. It’s fun running with someone and it definitely goes by quick. We were going at a really good pace considering that we were talking very comfortably for the whole time. Wore my pink 890 NB. So excited that Dustin is finally coming home tonight!

Day 19 – Friday Jan. 20, 2012 ~ 86 Days until Race

Day 20 – Saturday Jan. 21, 2012 ~ 85 Days until Race

20 Miles @ 8:55. Cold morning 15°F . 2 Miles into the run started to snow and it was coming down pretty good. Roads were slippery, went to the Newton Hills and back. There were not many people out running. My butt, hams, ankles were hurting as it was like running in sand, double the work. NB 890 pink.

Day 21 – Sunday Jan. 22, 2012 ~ 84 Days until Race

6.63 @ 8:35. Colder than yesterday but sunny. Sidewalks were not cleared so when I run on them it was a harder workout (felt it in my feet, hams and gluteus) when I run on the road it wasn’t too safe as roads are small. Wore NB 890 V2.

Week 4 – Jan 23 – 29 ( – 12 Weeks)

Day 22 – Monday Jan. 23, 2012 ~ 83 Days until Race

6.1 Miles @ 8:15. Warmer than yesterday 30°F. Felt good, sidewalks still not so great. My legs and knees were really sore from running 27 miles this weekend on snow. Went to Hot Power Yoga at HYP with Claire at 11am!

Day 23 – Tuesday Jan. 24, 2012 ~ 82 Days until Race

12 Miles @ 8:28. Warm day 45°F, it felt like spring! Lots of puddle cause of the snow melting. Felt really tired and sore=( New Balance Yellow

Day 24 – Wednesday Jan. 25, 2012 ~ 81 Days until Race

6 Miles @ 8:15. Warm day 40°F. Not much snow left. New Balance yellow.

Day 25 – Thursday Jan. 26, 2012 ~ 80 Days until Race

12 Miles @ 8:22. Warm day 35-40°F. Woke up and their was a dust of snow. Used for the first time the Heart Rate monitor. Average 145 bpm. New Balance yellow. Last night I got another free NB 890 V2 yellow sneaks. Thanks New Balance!

Day 26 – Friday Jan. 27, 2012 ~ 79 Days until Race

Power Hot Yoga with Pilar @ HYP @ 4:15-5:45, went with Chris!

Day 27 – Saturday Jan. 28, 2012 ~ 78 Days until Race

22 Miles @8:28. Gorgeous day, lots of people running. To the bottom of HB Hill and back. Started out slow but felt great especially my legs, did second half faster than first half. Doing Yoga the night before the long run helps a lot!

Day 28 – Sunday Jan. 29, 2012 ~ 77 Days until Race

Spinning @ Gstar @ 9 am with Fabs, Di, Keith, AJ, Jen, Linds. Zumba with Blair @ 11am

Week 5 – Jan 30 –  Feb. 5 ( – 11 Weeks)

Day 29 – Monday Jan. 30, 2012 ~ 76 Days until Race

6.1 Miles @ 8:29. Cloudy day but not too cold, a little windy. Vinyasa flow @ noon w/ Sarah Gardner (our ambassador) @ Your Element Yoga, Sudbury. Chris & Fab will also be there=) Spinning @ Gstar @ 6 pm with Fabs!

Day 30 – Tuesday Jan. 31, 2012 ~ 75 Days until Race

12 Miles @ 8:31. Cloudy & cold, felt like it was about to snow. Twisted my ankle around mile 5.5 but got 100% better while running. Yellow NB.

Day 31 – Wednesday Feb. 1, 2012 ~ 74 Days until Race

6 Miles @ 8:37. Cloudy and cold in the AM, in the afternoon it was 55 degrees! Yellow NB. Spinning @ Gstar at 6pm with Fabs, Jess & Claire.

Day 32 – Thursday Feb. 2, 2012 ~ 73 Days until Race

12 Miles @ 8:26. The whole mile 2 I had bad belly cramps that went away when I hit mile 3. Yellow NB.

Day 33 – Friday Feb. 3, 2012 ~ 72 Days until Race

24 Miles @ 8:36. Reallly sore afterwards, it was a really tough run, I think I am overtraining. Also went ice skating with Gregg & Dia a the Frog Pond in Boston=)

Day 35 – Sunday Feb. 5, 2012 ~ 70 Days until Race

Really exausted! Run 2 miles with Dustin & Luna. Then 3 miles alone.

Run after work at 4pm and felt really strong and fast. 12 Miles @ 7:45!

Day 38 – Wednesday Feb. 8, 2012 ~ 67 Days until Race

6 Miles @ 8:02. Very cold this Am 16 degrees!

Day 39 – Thursday Feb. 9, 2012 ~ 66 Days until Race

10 Miles @ 7:59.

16 Miles @ 8:10. Run with Marisa from Newton Center. We joined Rick Muhr group.

22.5 @ 7:46 from Hopkinton to Newton Hills. That’s how I land in taperland=) This run makes 80 mile for the week! Took my first ice bath right after Dustin drove me home, amazing!

12 Miles @ 8:49 soooo sloooow!! I was so tired and breathing hard. After the run went to Power Hour with Sheryl at HYP at 11am!

BOOTYCAMP at 8am  taught by GSTAR + Spinning at 9am still Gstar=) Fabs & I were VIP and spun in the front row!

Day 91 – Sunday April 1, 2012 ~ 14 Days until Race

17 Miles @ 8:20 till the Newton Hills and back. Took a 10 minutes Ice Bath!

Day 92 – Monday April 2 , 2012 ~ 13 Days until Race

Gym with Fabs did arms and abs (1 hour) then Spinning at Gstar with Fabs @ 6pm

Day 93 – Tuesday April 3, 2012 ~ 12 Days until Race

Day 94 – Wednesday April 4, 2012 ~ 11 Days until Race

5.4 @ 9:36!! Worse run of my running life! Had no coffee cause our fridge broke and felt very tired and anxious. Went to Spin at Gstar with Fabs & Di at night and my legs were very tired.

Day 95 – Thursday April 5, 2012 ~ 10 Days until Race

REST cause I was sore behind my knee from the gym. (Note to self: bad idea to do something new few weeks away from race!!) Went to Yoga at HYP with Masaaki (1:15)

Day 96 – Friday April 6, 2012 ~ 9 Days until Race

10 Miles @ 8:10. Run to the Wellesley College Track and did 12 laps(3 miles) at 7:39, 7:33, 7:31. Hot Yoga (1:15) with Pilar at HYP, Jess V came too! Amazing class!

Day 97 – Saturday April 7, 2012 ~ 8 Days until Race

R.E.S.T !!!! Titanic in 3D=)

Day 98 – Sunday April 8, 2012 ~ 7 Days until Race

Day 99 – Monday April 9, 2012 ~ 6 Days until Race

I was about to go for a run but had a pain behind my knee, kinda like a clicking tendon or something. After almost going twice and felt the discomfort I smartened up and didn’t go! Iced my knee.

Day 100 – Tuesday April 10, 2012 ~ 5 Days until Race

5 Miles @ 8:09. The clicking pain behind my knee was still there and had planned to run 6 but had to stop at 5 cause the pain was kinda uncomfortable. Went to HYP in Needham for an amaizng Yoga class with Jacqui and Erica singing! Went w/Fabs, Chris, Jess and Nichole and Sarah Gardner were there by surprise too! Iced my knee.

Day 101 – Wednesday April 11, 2012 ~ 4 Days until Race

The clicking was still there=( But after 5 minutes running it was gone and felt really good. The pain didn’t come back during the day either! 6 Miles at 7:57 pace. Had a dream I was running Boston and HB hill was steeper than usual and never ending. I finished but didn’t know how long it took me as I didn’t have the Garmin ha ha

Day 102 – Thursday April 12, 2012 ~ 3 Days until Race

The clicking was back( 3.2 Miles @ 7:49 pace. Dustin is in Indianapolis and starting to get really nervous, it suppose to be in the 80’s on Monday.

Day 103 – Friday April 13, 2012 ~ 2 Days until Race

5 Miles @ 7:58 pace.

Day 104 – Saturday April 14, 2012 ~ 1 Days until Race

Day 105 – Sunday April 15, 2012 ~ 0 Days until Race
